Things to Consider before Installing a Steam Shower

There was a time when steaming meant visiting a Spa. This involved making of appointments and dishing out some money. Today, however, this can all be done in house. More and more homeowners are having steam showers installed. People have realized that having a steam shower at home is economically viable, it is green and just simply luxurious.

You no longer have to make an appointment to enjoy that sinus relieving steam bath. You only need to walk into your own shower at home and turn on your very own steam shower. You can soak in that sweetly scented room for 20 minutes and only use 2 gallons of water. Contrary to common beliefs, steam showers do not use up that much water.

But before you pick up the phone and call 'Brownes Health' and have that shower installed, there are a few things that you need to know. Here are some of the essential steam shower installation guidelines that you should look into first.

Things to consider before installing a steam shower

1. You must have the space for it

Although it doesn't take that much space to install the shower, the designated place should be thoroughly insulated. The shower room should be enclosed, made out of non-porous material and have a floor drain. Also, the shower door should be water tight. This is all necessary to keep the steam from escaping and to protect the rest of the house from the it.

2. Have ample space for the steam generator
The appropriate distance between the steam generator and the actual steam room should be at least 60 feet. You can choose to keep the generator in your heated attic, closet or even basement.

3. Double pane your shower windows
If you are going to have windows in the steam room, you will need to have them double paned. Additionally, you should not have any venting, air conditioning or heating devices should be part of the room.

4. Appropriately locate the in-shower control
Although this should, and will, be handled by us (your trusted installer), you should at least know the basics. When it comes to in-shower controls, the appropriate location will be away from the direct flow of steam. That is about 5 feet from the floor. This way, the bather can easily get to them as well.

5. Make economical use of the available space
You might not have too much space in the steam room itself, but this does not mean that you cannot steam in comfort. When it comes to sitting facilities, you can either have a bench installed, (if you have the space for it), but if you do not have the space, then you should appropriately choose some fold-up chairs. They should be waterproofed.

6. Take precaution to prevent injury

Most people forget that steam rooms get very slippery. In order to prevent unnecessary injuries due to this fact, you should consider installing 'anti-skid' strips on your steam room floor.
